How Do You Change Your Mind and Your Life?
For Mary Beth and so many others, it is time to understand how the story in our mind drives our daily actions. Our mind creates these stories, and we live every day affirming them. When new things challenge the familiar or the comfortable, we run away from them — the oldest part of the brain, the amygdala, protects us by resisting the new and the change. It is not happy to re-write the story and create a new “reality” for us. It is much more efficient just living the old story, even if it is not the one we want to live.
In our innovative online program, Rethink Your Journey with Andi Simon, we show you how to change your mind to change your life. You will gradually begin to realize the power of the story you hold today to anchor you in place. To change that story, you literally need to do three things:
- Understand your story as you might tell it to someone today. Just write it down and tell it to a friend or a stranger. Listen to what comes through that story, the highlights and the low points. Don’t just tell a story about the good things. Include those parts of your life that you don’t like.
- Think about what you would like to change by doing more of some things and less of others. Or what might you want to start or stop, or never change. Write them down and think about what it is telling you about you and your story.
- Now, write a new story about how you imagine you would like your life to become, and give it a date by when.
Put that imaginary story someplace where you can see it or read it often. Then let your mind stay open to new ideas that come to you through all types of experiences and channels.
Whatever you do, don’t toss out the new story about the new you.
Once you have yourself imagining the “new you,” how does it feel? We decide with our hearts and then our heads kick in. Let your heart feel that new story until it feels familiar, comfortable, like a friend.
